A design from Andy's Japanese-inspired fall 2010 collection

This is quite a week for Andy South, the Honolulu resident and HCC grad who begins his stint on season 8 of Project Runway tonight. Those who have been reading my columns for the past few years know that I predicted Andy would be on the show about three years ago. He is enormously talented and can sew incredibly fast. During the past few years he has been designing costumes for 24/7 Danceforce as well as working as a designer with Baik Designs and creating custom evening gowns. His versatility is amazing and will serve him well with the various challenges the show throws at him.

Andy e-mailed me on Monday asking if I could help him find sponsors for a trip to New York for the Project Runway premiere last night. I got on the horn and started to gather up sponsors for him, but he managed to find a sponsor within hours. He needed to have airfare so he could attend the premiere, then fly back to watch the show tonight with family and friends.

Let’s all root for Andy this season. Buy, hey, we have another Hawaii contestant, Ivy Higa, on the show who also deserves our support. She’s a UHM grad with oodles of talent as well. She lives and works in New York now, so they may not ackowledge her as a Hawaii girl, but, hey, she is ours!

Both of these Island-based contestants have a sophisticated aesthetic that will help put Hawaii on the international fashion map. They will do us proud! And yes, I plan to be a cheerleader for them as I was for Jay Nicolas Sario last season.
