Painting and photo by Jerry Mayfield

Last week Jerry and I took a brief staycation at The Modern Honolulu, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had a corner suite with magnificent views of the harbor and the pool. We love that pool! In the mornings we had it all to ourselves for lap swimming.

We walked to Kapiolani Park, heading in the direction of  Diamond Head on the beach and ‘Ewa on Kalakaua. As we walked past the site of the International Marketplace, we saw the last of the kiosks being loaded onto trucks. What a sad sight! Jerry committed the scene to memory and did a little watercolor of the end of an era. Isn’t it a lovely way to pay tribute to a disappearing icon?
