Kyle Kagamida, home for the holidays.

Kyle Kagamida tends to use his clients’ and friends’ first names only: Reese, Carrie, Jessica, Demi, Kristin, Oscar. That would be Reese Witherspoon, Carrie Underwood, Jessica Simpson (or Alba), Demi Moore, Kristin Bell and Oscar de la Renta.

When I met with Kyle yesterday at Mocha Java, he had just got off the phone with Oscar de la Renta. The designer himself. Kyle is collaborating with de la Renta on a gown for the Oscars.

It’s not uncommon for the 22-year old stylist from Hawaii to work with designers and design houses such as Versace, Gucci, Chanel, Altuzarra and Valentino. He will do just about anything, he said, to ensure “My girl gets THE dress. I’ll fight for THE dress,” he said with obvious passion.

To say Kyle’s rise in the world of Hollywood styling has been meteoric is an understatement.  While still a student at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, from which he just received a degree), Kyle applied for an internship with celebrity stylist Nicole Chavez. Chavez has been named a “Top 10 Superstar Stylist” by Forbes magazine.  His first day on the job Kyle was asked to style Kristin Bell for her red carpet appearance at the People’s Choice Awards. He dressed her in Valentino Couture.

In recent months, Kyle has been working with both Chavez and Brad Goreski, former style director for Rachel Zoe and star of his own reality show on Bravo, “It’s a Brad Brad World.”. Their clients include Jessica Alba, Demi Moore, Maya Rudolph, Jessica Simpson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Reese Witherspoon, to name a few. He has nothing but nice things to say about his clients. “They’re all so sweet. I haven’t run into a diva yet,” although he knows there are divas out there; he has heard tales from other stylists.

Kyle has established credibility with both showrooms and locations managers. Due to his diligence and trustworthiness, he now works with five L.A. showrooms. They allow him to borrow gowns and accessories worth thousands of dollars for his celebrity red carpet events and editorial styling assignments. His most recent media coup is the cover and cover story of HI Luxury magazine. The magazine gave him free reign and total responsibility for the ten page spread. He chose Honolulu fashion photographer Harold Julian to shoot the story. The dress on the cover is Gucci couture. Inside, the model is wearing a dress Carrie Underwood wore on the red carpet. Kyle was able to get these iconic garments on loan.

Kyle struggles with choices between editorial styling and celebrity styling. A recent tough choice: Should he go to New York Fashion Week in February, where he has been invited to sit in the front row of shows such as Tory Burch, DVF, Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu and Oscar de la Renta – or should he stay in Hollywood and style “his” celebs for their red carpet appearances at award shows? (Answer: Hollywood is winning out.) “There’s no feeling like seeing your girl on the red carpet,” he said wistfully.

There’s no question that Kyle is working hard to catapult his career. His average work day is 14 or 15 hours. He has had to curtail his daily workouts and his time outs for himself are non-existent. But he is establishing himself in Hollywood as a trusted taste-maker. Although he is quiet and unassuming, Kyle is a powerhouse of talent, determination and drive. You know what? It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

Just before Kyle left for L.A. last year, I asked him to visualize his perfect job. He said it was to work for Rachel Zoe. Next week Kyle is interviewing with Rachel Zoe.

Kyle is incredibly inspiring. I don’t even say that just as a friend. But then again, because we are friends I feel like I can say that with even more confidence. Did that even make sense? Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s up to next!
