One of the best looks on last night’s runway. Photos courtesy of Lyle Amine Photography

Emerging Honolulu designer Matt Breuning held a holiday fashion show last night at The Republik. His show was combined with a retirement party for uber-blogger and social media whiz Christa Wittmier, aka Super CW. After 15 years as a social media queen, Christa is “retiring” to focus on her “real job” with Young’s Market and her volunteer “job” with Pow Wow Hawaii. The event was a fund raiser for Pow Wow Hawaii.

While I try not to be negative about emerging designers, it’s hard to come up with any compliments about the clothes that came down the runway last night. I don’t think I would be doing Matt any favors to candy coat my commentary. Perhaps it was because Matt couldn’t afford good fabrics. which makes good results difficult to accomplish. Perhaps Matt was simply trying to do too much and was unable to finish his garments properly. Perhaps his studio is so close to Andy South’s that Andy’s signature chevrons couldn’t help but creep into Matt’s designs.  I’d like to find excuses for Matt, as he is obviously a hard-working designer. But the fact is, the clothes were largely derivative and unoriginal. Some were even downright dumpy.

On the other hand, the hair and makeup were superb. The models looked positively radiant. Hats off to Ryan Jacobie Salon for the beautiful, sleek, modern hair and to the independent makeup artists who did such pretty makeup.  The looks worked on every single model.

I thought the look above was pretty and flattering. The drape is simple and the top is sleek. The proportions work well. This one’s a keeper.

Mahalo nui loa to up-and-coming photographer Lyle Amine. He is a delight to work with! Find him at www.lyleaminephotography.com.
