Anya Rezova models a gown by Andy South. Photo by Andi GasparThe Cupola Theatre was jammed last night with Andy South's friends, family and adoring fans. It was an opportunity to watch the finale of Project Runway's season 8 with our homegrown star. As always, Andy did us proud. Regardless of what the judges may have set down, we all know that Andy is THE winner. It's sad to see this season end, as it's been an emotional roller coaster and therefore exciting to watch. I think everyone felt engaged with the challenges and the designers this season. It will be a hard one to beat.Andy's winning ways have endeared him to acquaintances and audiences alike. It was especially fun to see his Honolulu Community College teachers (Joy Nagaue, Lillian Zane and Karen Kamahele) so excited over his success. They, and I, knew him as a student. Even then it was evident to us that he had something special and his talent could take him far.Photo by Andi GasparI really loved Andy's Laos-inspired collection for Fashion Week. The colors were incredibly chic. The fabrics were spectacular. The silhouettes deceptively simple and elegant and most of them would be flattering to many body types. My favorite was the gray top with the woven strips in the front. Absolutely exquisite! And, yes, Andy can even design hats like this over-the-top rose. Photo by Andi Gaspar

Andy spoke briefly, then answered questions from the audience. Here are some highlights:

+ “My dirty secret is that I try on everything I make, from bathing suits to gowns.”

+ During his audition tape for PR he said his goal was to dress Heidi Klum for a red carpet event when she was pregnant. “And she’s always pregnant,” he quipped.

+ “I’m actually very quiet and I don’t get much camera time because I don’t say much…. But now I have everyone’s opinions coming at me now that I’ve been on the show.”

Andy could probably be the next Philip Treacy if he chose to focus on millinery. Photo by Andi Gaspar

+ As I reported several blogs ago, Andy’s next step will be a collaboration with Richie Miao, designer of mens wear line Lovelessizm. (I wrote a story about his collection a few weeks before The Advertiser shut down. I’ll see if I can still find it online for you.) I think it will be brilliant if they can both hold in the reins a little on design details. If they put all the fabulous design details they want to put into a garment, it will quickly become unaffordable to manufacture.

For three years Andy designed pageant gowns. Here are a few. Photo by Andi Gaspar.

+ “I am happy with the way they portrayed me in the show,” Andy said.

+ Project Runway runs on a killer schedule. They work and shoot every day except for July 4th.

We wish Andy every success here and wherever he chooses to design next. And I will do my best to keep you updated about him through this blog.

It was a great event, it was really lovely to hear stories from Andy and about Andy. I especially liked hearing words from his mom.
